Dog-Friendly Summer Activities in St. Paul That Beat the Heat
Summer is prime time for outdoor adventures—but when the temps climb, it’s important to keep your dog safe and cool. Dogs can’t sweat like we do, and hot pavement, humidity, and overexertion can quickly lead to heat exhaustion.
The good news? There are still plenty of ways to have tail-wagging fun without risking your pup’s health. Here are some of our favorite safe, dog-friendly activities for hot summer days:
Walks During the Coolest Hours
In the summer, timing is everything. Aim for walks in the morning or later in the evening, when the sun is low and the pavement is cool. Avoid the midday heat—it’s tough on dogs and can burn their paw pads. To check if it’s too warm to walk, place your hand on the sidewalk for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws.
Shady Strolls Around Local Lakes
St. Paul parks are packed with scenic walking paths that stay cool and breezy—especially around our many lakes. One favorite? Como Lake. It’s got plenty of shade, water views, and is an easy, flat loop for dogs of all ages and sizes.
Bring water, go slow, and let your pup sniff the breeze. Bonus if they enjoy sticking their paws in the water!
Backyard Splash Zones
A kiddie pool, hose mist, or sprinkler session can turn your yard into a doggy water park. Many dogs love splashing, dunking, or just lying in the water to cool off. Remember to always supervise, even in shallow water, and be sure to empty pools when you're done to avoid bugs or accidents.
Frozen Dog Treats & Enrichment Toys
Keep your pup mentally engaged and physically cool with frozen snacks. Try:
A frozen peanut butter and banana-stuffed Kong
Ice cubes made with low-sodium chicken broth
“Dogsicles” made from plain yogurt and blueberries
Freezer toys can keep dogs busy and cool at the same time—especially helpful on days when it’s too hot to play outside.
Indoor Play on Super Hot Days
When it’s just too steamy out, take the fun inside. Tug-of-war, puzzle feeders, hide-and-seek with treats, and indoor fetch in a hallway can burn off energy without overheating your dog.
A fan and a cool floor to sprawl out on? Heaven for a heat-weary pup.
Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Know what to look for:
Heavy panting or rapid breathing
Bright red gums or tongue
Wobbliness or lethargy
Vomiting or collapsing
If you see any of these, move your dog to a cooler space, offer water, and call your vet immediately.
Stay Safe, Stay Cool, Stay Active
Summer can still be full of sniff-worthy walks and splashtastic fun—with a few smart adjustments. Stick to the shade, stay hydrated, and play it cool, literally.
Your dog will thank you with happy tail wags, sloppy kisses, and a well-deserved nap in the AC.
